Things I've played with

Here are some links or paragraphs showing some things I have done while playing. I define learning new concepts, ideas, technologies, software, languages etc. as "playing." Why? Well some might say I am one sick individual because I consider learning playing. It's fun and I don't get hurt.

Active Server Pages (ASP)

Although I'm still in the playing process, I created a log-in for a corporate intranet over Christmas break as I played. I'm not sure if they used it or not. So far I have played to the point of connecting to databases and performing various operations (delete, add, edit etc.) ASP is pretty neat. I hope to also learn PHP soon as well. This should not be that hard as I understand ASP is just Microsoft's (costly) version of PHP. Seeing that I prefer free software over that of the kind you pay for this PHP playing should start fairly quickly.

PHP

And quickly enough my PHP playing has started. I recently added a form on the contact page which allows you to send me an e-mail message. Now I realize you could do this by using a local e-mail program but that wouldn't be any fun now would it? Especially if your computer goes by the name of molasses. So a little PHP playing has brought about this neat device. Nothing revolutionary, just something neat. Oh and guess what? No really go on now and guess. Ok, here's a hint....PHP is available from PHP.net for the low cost of FREE. Ouch! That hits those big business bullies way below the belt! I've also played with more PHP this past summer (2002). Once again at the bank, I developed an employee database using PHP and MySQL. The web interface allows users to search for employees (by name, location, position etc.), while administrators can search, add, edit or delete employees. Thanks to Welling and Thomson (PHP and MySQL Web Development) for helping me to play better.

Really, gfuss.net itself should be explanation enough for my knowledge of PHP.

Perl

Woo-hoo! I have done something pretty nifty with Perl. I wrote a Perl program which parses through the httpd log file searching for only my entries. Then it only grabs IP numbers, adds them to a hash and writes all of this to a HTML file! Regular expressions are a (gift|pain) from heaven above. If you want to check out this cool process (well the generated HTML at least), just head on over. Oh and by the way, if you are a dead gnat, please do not continually click the (reload|fresh) button to see something happen. The program is in the crontab and set to only run at midnight every day.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

I created a new website and played with some CSS at the same time. While I did learn a lot about CSS it was done with much help from Elated :) What's that you say? Great design! Love the colors! Well unfortunately I had nothing to do with that. I have designed pages in the past, but nothing much can be said of my graphic artistry (yet). So a big thanks goes out to the folks at Elated :) who helps out the folks with no time, graphical skills, money and so on.

Thanks Parallax!

My playing (independent study) with microcontrollers is now complete. A mere seven fort-nights (that's fourteen weeks in case you did not know) later and I am now a microcontroller god. I shall now go by the name of "Gfuss." What's that you say? That has always been your name you say? Of course it has. Why in the world would I want to change my name after playing with microcontrollers?
